How pressure washing can damage block paving

The blocks themselves are generally tough, but the joints between them are vulnerable. Aggressive pressure washing strips out kiln-dried sand, leaving blocks with less support and allowing them to move over time. This is one reason a driveway may look clean straight after a DIY wash, then develop loose or uneven areas later.

A concentrated jet can also scar softer, weathered blocks, especially around edges and on older paving. If the surface is already spalling, cracked or unstable, pressure can expose the damage rather than solve it. Water forced beneath loose blocks may also disturb the bedding below.

Poor technique often leaves visible cleaning lines. These stripes are not dirt - they are an unevenly cleaned surface caused by an inconsistent distance, angle or speed. They can be difficult to disguise without re-cleaning the whole area correctly.

The condition of the paving matters

Not every dirty driveway needs the same treatment. Moss, algae, weeds and general grime respond well to a controlled clean. Black spot, oil staining and ingrained discolouration may need specialist products and more than one stage of treatment.

Before cleaning, a professional should look for movement, sunken sections, failed edging, missing jointing sand and damaged blocks. Cleaning will not repair a structural problem. In some cases, lifting and relaying a small affected area, repairing the edges or re-sanding joints should be completed before the final clean.
