A fresh oil leak can turn a smart driveway into an eyesore overnight. Start by identifying the driveway surface

Before applying any cleaner, check what your driveway is made from. Concrete and block paving are generally durable, but their surface texture and jointing need care. Natural stone can be more absorbent and may react badly to acidic or overly aggressive products.

If the area has been sealed, test any treatment on a small, inconspicuous section first. A strong degreaser may affect an older sealer or leave a visibly cleaner patch around the stain. This does not mean the stain cannot be removed, but it does mean the cleaning process needs to be matched to the surface.

Avoid using petrol, thinners, bleach or washing-up liquid as a shortcut. Petrol and thinners are unsafe, harmful to surrounding ground and can drive oil further through the paving. Washing-up liquid creates foam but is rarely strong enough to lift a settled automotive oil stain.

How to remove oil stains from driveway paving

For a recent spill, begin by absorbing as much free oil as possible. Cover the affected area with an absorbent material such as cat litter, clay-based granules or a purpose-made oil absorbent. Leave it in place for several hours, or overnight where possible, then sweep it up carefully.

Do not scrub at fresh oil before absorbing it. Brushing too soon can push the liquid wider across the driveway and into more pores.

Once the loose oil has been removed, apply a proper driveway degreaser designed for exterior paving. Follow the dilution and dwell-time instructions on the product. Most products need time to break down the oil before they are agitated with a stiff brush and rinsed away.

Use a brush with firm synthetic bristles, working from the outside of the mark towards the centre. This helps stop the stain spreading. Rinse with clean water and inspect the area once it has dried. Oil stains often look lighter when wet, so wait until the paving is fully dry before deciding whether another treatment is needed.

A second or third application is common with established marks. Patience matters here. Several measured treatments are safer and more effective than one aggressive attempt.

When a poultice treatment helps

A deep, stubborn oil stain may need a poultice-style treatment. These products draw oil back out of porous paving as they dry, rather than simply cleaning the surface. They can be particularly useful on concrete and older block paving where the oil has been sitting for months.

The product is spread over the stain, left for the stated period and then removed. Results vary depending on the age of the spill, the type of oil and whether the surface has previously been treated. A faded shadow can remain after the first application, especially on pale paving, but professional cleaning can often improve it further.

Why pressure washing alone is not the answer

A domestic pressure washer may make the surrounding area look cleaner, which can make the oil mark appear more obvious. More importantly, water pressure alone does not dissolve oil. It can carry contaminated water into joints, flower beds and drainage points while leaving the source of the stain behind.

Used carelessly, a pressure washer can also strip jointing material from block paving, roughen weaker concrete or leave visible cleaning lines. The result is a patchy driveway that needs further remedial work.
